Course Intro & Overview

The first session is an orientation where we will review standard project management terms and lingo to ensure participants are familiar with them prior to the training. This session will also introduce the tools, software, and processes (i.e. GoToWebinar) that will be used for the training. You must enroll in this course to access course content.

Skill Building Session 1

Scope Is the Basis for EVERYTHING (1 PDH)

Project scope is the part of project planning that involves determining and documenting a list of specific project goals, deliverables, features, functions, tasks, deadlines, and ultimately costs. In other words, it is what needs to be achieved and the work that must be done to deliver a project. This session will help you break down the project scope into more manageable pieces.

Skill Building Session 2

Scheduling Basics – The Key Elements of On-Time Project Completion (1PDH)

Scheduling in project management is the listing of activities, deliverables, and milestones within a project. A schedule also usually includes the planned start and finish date, duration, and resources assigned to each activity. In this session, you will learn the two key elements of a schedule and how to create a Project Network Diagram.

Skill Building Session 3

Project Cost Estimating (1 PDH)

Good project cost estimating is a mission-critical talent for any project manager in a consulting firm. Cost control can make or break a firm as well as the relationship with a client. In this session, you will learn the three cost estimating techniques and the elements of cost estimates.

Skill Building Session 4

Project Planning - Track, Assess, and Adjust (1PDH)

The project plan (aka, proposal) is built on scope, schedule, and cost. The project plan is like the flight plan that a pilot files prior to taking off. It shows the intended route, speed, and arrival time. Sometimes the wind speed or direction changes or bad weather disrupts traffic. Our projects are like that, too. Unforeseen things happen. Having a plan allows us to determine whether we’re on course and can help steer us back to an on-time, on-budget arrival. It also helps us spot and manage Scope Creep, which refers to changes, continuous or uncontrolled growth in a project’s scope, at any point after the project begins. The ability to manage scope creep and other project changes will greatly impact the success of your projects.

This session will help you measure progress against the project plan and learn strategies on how to handle project changes.

Skill Building Session 5

Meetings and Other Ways to Communicate Effectively (1PDH)

Now that you understand the basics of project planning and tracking, we will cover some methods to keep your client, your manager, and your team in the loop. (Pssst! This is where projects usually go south.)

In this session, you will learn how to deliver a kick-off meeting and some best practices for communicating effectively.

Are PDHs available?
Yes! Professional Development Hours (PDHs) are provided for each of our five skill building sessions after completing the session evaluation for all of the sessions. There are five (5) in total and they are accepted in most US states that accept non-technical content.
Can I get reimbursed?
We hope so! You can copy/paste this “Information for your Supervisor” note we’ve written to help you get the support of your supervisor or HR department. More and more enlightened organizations are encouraging their teams to contribute by learning. Every student also receives a certificate of completion that you can share with your HR department.
How much time will the program take over the 5 weeks?
There are 5 skill-building sessions (that will also be recorded) and can be watched either live at 1pm ET (according to schedule). The calls are skill building sessions that will focus on project scoping, scheduling, cost estimating, creating a project plan, and effective meeting and communication strategies.
